SHINE Mindfulness Activity Journal for Kids
The SHINE Mindfulness Activity Journal™ is a colorful, interactive resource for children ages 4–12. Through short daily reflection pages and engaging activities, children explore mindfulness, emotional awareness, confidence, focus, gratitude, coping skills, kindness, and connection.
Designed as a month-long experience, the journal helps children practice important skills proactively—in calm, everyday moments, not only when challenges arise. Created by pediatric occupational therapist Karla Cuthbertson, it is easy to use at home, in homeschool routines, classrooms, co-ops, children’s groups, and child-centered wellness spaces.
What Is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment with openness and curiosity. For children, it can be as simple as noticing their breathing, naming a feeling, observing their surroundings, or focusing on what they are doing right now.
Practicing mindfulness gives children opportunities to pause, build self-awareness, and choose helpful responses during everyday experiences. It does not prevent difficult feelings or stressful situations, but it can give children simple tools for moving through them.

How to Use the SHINE Journal
The SHINE Journal takes only a few minutes a day, although children and families can spend longer whenever they wish. It can be used in the morning, after school, before bed, or at any time that fits naturally into the child’s routine. Children can complete pages independently or alongside a supportive adult.
Daily reflection pages encourage emotional check-ins and meaningful conversation. Activity pages introduce skills such as calming, awareness, kindness, gratitude, confidence, and coping during neutral everyday moments—so children have familiar tools available when challenges arise.
The journal also includes weekly planning pages and activity calendars that support organization, routines, independence, and everyday practice. Families can follow the journal in order or move at a pace that works best for the child.
