The SHINE Self-Regulation Cards™ are a set of 44 conversation-starter cards designed to help children build the background knowledge they need to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions. Each card introduces a simple, supportive concept — like "I can take a breath when I need a moment" — that you explore together during calm, everyday moments.
The idea is simple but powerful: when a child has already talked about a coping strategy, heard examples, and made it their own, they're far more likely to remember it when a big feeling shows up. And when they forget, a caregiver can gently guide them back — "Hey, remember when we talked about this?" — or pull the card and revisit it together.
That concrete connection between conversation and experience is what makes these cards effective for kids, parents, educators, therapists, and wellness professionals alike.
How to use them:
During a calm moment (not in the middle of a meltdown), pull a card — either from a specific category or at random — and explore it together. Ask questions, share examples, and let kids come up with their own. There's no right or wrong answer; the goal is building familiarity with the concept so it becomes part of their emotional toolkit.
